Valeria Alonso
I am Valeria Alonso, an actress, writer, and director. Argentine-Spanish, born in Buenos Aires, and based in Spain for nearly two decades.
I began my artistic training at the age of twelve and have since developed a sustained career across acting, dance, writing, screenwriting, and directing. I trained in Buenos Aires, Paris, and Madrid, and completed the EXERCE Master’s program at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier, focusing on movement research and contemporary creation. My work is defined by the intersection of stage and audiovisual languages, although in recent years writing has become a central part of my practice.
In 2000, I directed my first stage work, El Huevo, and in 2005 I founded La Cabra, a company I led for twenty years. Through this platform, I developed a long-term artistic research focused on physical theatre, movement, and video, creating and directing more than a dozen stage works and audiovisual projects. I have worked across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, and throughout this journey I have received awards, grants, and residencies in France, Spain, Switzerland, and Argentina. These include the Paris Young Talents Award (French Government, 2003), the First Prize at the XX Madrid Choreographic Competition (2006), a Swiss Government grant for the creation of Viento, Mucho Viento, premiered in Geneva in 2013, and an Honourable Mention in Playwriting from Argentina’s National Arts Fund (2012).
As a performer, I have worked in film, theatre, and television in national and international productions, and have been part of leading companies such as De La Guarda, La Fura dels Baus, and Fuerza Bruta. These experiences deeply shaped my understanding of performance, risk, and collective creation.
As a creator and director, I have developed original stage and audiovisual works including Mamífera, Pibas en Orsai, La Queja, Gloria (about Gloria Fuertes), Boyfriend, La Piel, Mi Tele Tiene un Grillo Dentro, and Viento, Mucho Viento. Alongside my work for the stage and screen, I write fiction. My first novel, Las heroínas también tienen miedo, published in Spain and Argentina, received the 69th Ateneo Novel Prize (City of Valladolid). I am currently writing my third novel.
